Australia Stands Side by Side with the Pacific at MOS26

Australia is proud to stand side by side with our Pacific family at the inaugural Melanesian Oceans Summit 2026, hosted by Papua New Guinea here in Port Moresby.

As the summit continues, we are inspired by the leadership of Papua New Guinea, our Pacific and South-East Asian neighbours in tackling the most pressing challenges facing our shared waters — from sustainable fisheries and the Blue Economy to climate resilience and maritime safety.

Australia is committed to supporting these efforts through:

  • ➡️ Regional governance — partnering with Melanesian nations to ensure a rules-based ocean order.
  • ➡️ Climate resilience — investing in science-led strategies to protect coastal communities from rising sea levels.
  • ➡️ Safer seas — our ongoing work with the National Maritime Safety Authority (NMSA) to improve maritime safety and compliance across PNG's 15 maritime provinces.

A healthy ocean is the lifeblood of the Pacific — and protecting it requires all of us, standing together.

The PNG–Australia partnership continues to deepen through shared priorities on ocean stewardship, marine biodiversity protection, and inclusive economic growth.
