Minister Wong Champions Coral Reef Sustainability and Climate Action

In a recent workshop addressing Heads of Departments, Hon. Jelta Wong, Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, emphasized the critical importance of coral reef sustainability and the urgent need for proactive measures to combat climate change. He reaffirmed Papua New Guinea’s commitment to protecting and sustaining its coral reefs, acknowledging their vital role in marine ecosystems.
Wong announced a bold policy initiative focused on trading and monetizing carbon, underscoring the necessity for innovative financial solutions that support environmental conservation efforts. He highlighted the importance of raising global awareness about climate change, positioning Papua New Guinea as a custodian of the planet's "Kidneys and Lungs."
The Minister stressed that the upcoming Melanesian Ocean Summit will serve as a vital platform to amplify the Pacific Region's voice on sustainable ocean management.
Expressing gratitude, Wong thanked Dr. Eric Kwa, chair of the National Oceans Committee, for his leadership and noted the positive engagement from participants at the workshop. He believes that such collaboration is crucial for the successful implementation of these initiatives.
Through these combined efforts, the Minister aims to ensure that the message of sustainable ocean practices resonates worldwide, advocating for effective policies that rehabilitate and protect vital marine environments.
